Help bridge the gap in educating Jamaica’s youth and make way for our future leaders. Donating to help provide scholarships to students is a great way of giving back and aligns well with the Strategic Giving Plan of Calabar Alumni Florida. Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Calabar Alumni Florida has established mandatory recommended minimum eligibility requirements for need-based scholarships:

The student must demonstrate sound academic performance or progress.

The student must demonstrate financial need or hardship. Proof of financial need can be satisfied by one of the following: a) Identified by School Guidance Counsellor Department as a student from a family with financial hardship; or b) A letter of reference from a respected community member aware of the student’s financial hardship. (E.g., Church pastor, Coach, etc.)

The student must have a co-curricular activity such as being in a club/society or participating in a sporting activity.

The parent(s) or guardian of the student must consent and sign the application.

Maintenance Requirements
To remain on a scholarship, the student recipient shall:

maintain strong academic performance or progress;
-
keep a 95% attendance record;
-
participate in school co-curricular life; and
-
the student must send a properly written email to the scholarship committee to update his grades and school activities at the end of every school term.

Helping Build Someone Else's Future: Creating a Named Scholarship
Establishing a named annual scholarship in the name of a loved one, as a legacy, or as an annual tradition is welcomed. Named scholarships require a gift of $1,000 or more, payable at least 30 days before the start of the school year each September.
A $1,000 level generally covers daily lunch and bus fare to and from school for the entire school year. The balance of funds will go to school uniforms and a subsidy towards school or examination fees.
Donors may designate whether their scholarship will be awarded based on financial need, academic merit or both. In the case of need-based scholarships, requirements must include the base minimum eligibility criteria stated above. Additionally, other donor-specific requirements, pre-approved by Calabar Alumni Florida, may be included. To learn more about creating a Named Scholarship, click here.

Note: The continued existence of a scholarship (general or named) and its level of assistance is not guaranteed year after year. It is wholly dependent on the source of the funds, which relies on the generosity and goodwill of donors.

Name: Michael McCalla Scholarship for 2022-2023 School Year
Established: 2021
​
Donors: Initially funded by donations at Micheal's funeral. Future funding will come from direct donation appeals and proceeds from the annual all-alumni football tournament.
​
Honoring:
Michael “Macky” McCalla, Class of 1972, was a stalwart of the Calabar Florida Alumni. He proudly served the Chapter and had a never-ending love for our alma mater. As witnessed by his tireless service to Calabar personally and in his activities right up to his last role as vice president, he gave his utmost. A fervent planner of the All-alumni Soccer Tournament held annually in December; the tournament was renamed the "Michael McCalla Soccer Tournament."

Name: Vincent & Sylvia Thompson Scholarship
Established: 2023-2024 School Year

Donors: Sponsored by Calabar Old Boys and brothers, Karl C. Thompson, P.E, professional engineer and public executive, Class of 1980 and Maurice V. Thompson, Ph.D. Chemistry, research scientist, Class of 1982.​
Honoring:
This scholarship is created to honor the memory of their parents Vincent Thompson, Attorney-at-law and Sylvia Thompson, Educator, who were champions of everything education.

Scholarship Committee: Sheena McCalla, Peter Johnson, '80, member & Christopher Bulter, '93, member. Met on January 16, 2022, at 6 pm. Butler had proxy voting powers for Ms. McCalla. Initially funded by funeral donations. Future funding will come from direct donation appeals and proceeds from the annual all-alumni football tournament.

Selection Meeting:
Committee met on January 16, 2022, at 6 pm. using google meets. Butler had proxy voting powers for Ms. McCalla.Only four applications were received. All were reviewed by the committee and Joseph Tulloch, Grade 10 was selected as the recipient.

Scholarship Benefits: Benefits will cover the recipient's bus face and lunch for the school year. Hear from Joseph.

Initially funded by funeral donations. Future funding will come from direct donation appeals and proceeds from the annual all-alumni football tournament.

Selection Meeting:
Committee met using google meets. Only four applications were received. All were reviewed by the committee and Ronald Powell, Grade 10 was selected as the recipient.

Recipient: Tahjay Senior, Grade 7, 2021-2022 School Year
